Product Description Image processing is a hands-on discipline, and the best way to learn is by doing. This text takes its motivation from medical applications and uses real medical images and situations to illustrate and clarify concepts and to build intuition, insight and understanding. Designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students who will become end-users of digital image processing, it covers the basics of the major clinical imaging modalities, explaining how the images are produced and acquired. It then presents the standard image processing operations, focusing on practical issues and problem solving. Crucially, the book explains when and why particular operations are done, and practical computer-based activities show how these operations affect real images. All images, links to the public-domain software ImageJ and custom plug-ins, and selected solutions are available from www.cambridge.org/books/dougherty.

| Customer Reviews: Great book on imaging! April 15, 2009 N. Darwish (CA, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The most accessible book on imaging on the market. Written in a clear and direct style, with lots of figures and example questions. Comes with exercises that you can use with ImageJ. It doesn't overwhelm you with math, but uses it sparingly and always explains the background. This is a great book either for self-study or as a classroom textbook. It should also be of interest to those already working in medical imaging. Just the clearest, most user-friendly imaging book out there ...
The best resource for medical imaging on the market today.. February 13, 2010 David D (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book offers a very clear and intuitive approach to the essentials of image processing and its applications to medical imaging. It's superbly written and beautifully illustrated, and includes a greatly detailed selection of color plates. It's a very practical book that guides you to a sophisticated understanding of problems and solutions, without getting too overwhelmed by the math.
Each chapter begins with a clear overview and a list of learning objectives so that you know exactly what's covered. Also included are computer-based activities (that use ImageJ) and exercises. The website contains downloads of ImageJ plugins to support each chapter.
Overall, Digital Image Processing for Medical Applications, is a thoroughly accessible and highly informative title that may quite possibly be the best of its kind and a must-read for anyone with even the slightest curiosity in medical imaging. Highly recommended!
